For Scholars and Students

Getting your research out there!

About

Welcome to Research Gap, a video creation service where academics can share their research externally, rather than relying on university press offices or the media. It is not affiliated with any university, any one department, or particular journals and is simply about putting the research and researcher first. Every researcher has worked hard on a paper or two that haven't got as much attention as they deserve, lost into the void.
Research Gap is a fair-use adaptation or summary video of any 'open access' paper you have personally written. The idea is that researchers can share their work more often and quickly amongst each other and to the outside world, reaching new potential collaborators and impacting the wider public. It also publicises the journal and original article without revealing all the article specifics. A win-win!

Price

Because there are costs associated with every video (stock footage, scripting, voice, music clearances) I am unable to offer this service for free.
Pricing: at this early stage I'm suggesting a minimum of whatever your day rate is as a consultant as my fee for one video. If you want more than one video, or would like a department subscription, please let me know.
What you get: one video of approximately 4 to 7 minutes based on any published open access paper (or about to be published paper). Generally it will take about 14 working days from the initial deposit, if you want it sooner, this will cost more.
I will also periodically make 30 second or very short cut down versions. It is an investment that will be forever online that can be used in a variety of ways: self promotion, networking, conferences, student teaching.
It is quite easy to check your paper licence/permissions type, see the picture below. If your paper is NOT open access, please get written permission from your journal first. Research Gap is not liable for you not understanding the licence given to your particular paper.

Process & Enquire

1. Check your paper licence. If it's creative commons, we're good to go. Or if you have written permission, include that in step 2. You are responsible for checking this.
2. Send me your name, proposed paper details and PDF, timescale, link to research/university profile. Also send me your budget to: myresearchgap@gmail.com OR message via the LinkedIn page.
2. I will take a look and assess the viability of a short video. Some topics are easier than others! I will then respond with a quote. I cannot deviate too much from the current approach as that is what makes it affordable and consistent.
3. Pay me half upfront via PayPal or bank transfer. Many researchers have grants or department allowances, consider this as additional long term publicity.
4. I will adapt your paper into a short video. You get ONE round of revisions/check one draft for any egregious errors. Remember this is a 'gist' video/summarising the paper and is designed to encourage viewers to read the article in more depth, so some simplifying must be expected, with a substantial reduction in heavy theoretical sections.
5. After one round of revisions, you will get a final video link to approve. You will then pay the final half and I will then release the video.
6. The video will be housed on the Research Gap YouTube channel only and the link posted on the LinkedIn page. Academics are encouraged to like and subscribe/follow so we all benefit from the 'strength in numbers' network effect. e.g. if one person's video gets a lot of views, other videos are often viewed and so on. YouTube is also far more accessible, rather than yet another website users have to register with.
I plan to schedule videos weekly or stagger them depending on other timing factors and popularity. So: don't watch your work get lost in the void, instead watch it on Research Gap.Thank you!
